There are loads of Cabbage Soup Diet reviews around…but we had to do one of our own! A diet so daft that thousands of people use it – why?
We were chatting to a friend of ours recently and she mentioned that she’s trying to lose a few pounds during the summer holidays.
She’s tried a few diets before but despite knowing what we do for a living, she never listens to us.
She then went on to say that she was going to start the Cabbage Soup Diet as some of her friends had lost over 10lbs on it in little over a week.
Well, what further encouragement did we need?
Cabbage Soup Diet Reviews – What is it…?
The Cabbage Soup Diet has gone into folklore, it’s that notorious! The ultimate fad diet?
We’ve no idea where it came from and there are numerous variations around.
As such, we thought we’d review the version that our friend was using.
Essentially, the Cabbage Soup Diet is a starvation diet. You lose weight because you’re eating next to no calories.
The calories you do eat come from…? You guessed it, cabbage soup! Lots of it.
Without wishing to be crude, ensure your house or workplace has plenty of ventilation and stand downwind of friends and family!
This is a very strict diet and you’ve really got to be desperate to try it!
The one our friend tried looked like this:
Day 1 – Cabbage soup and fruit
Day 2 – Cabbage soup and vegetables, salad, etc, including one plain jacket potato
Day 3 – Cabbage soup and skimmed milk and…wait for it, six to eight bananas!
Day 4 – Cabbage soup and fruit and veg
Day 5 – Cabbage soup and lean meat, veg and salad
Day 6 – Cabbage soup and more lean meat, veg and salad
Day 7 – Cabbage soup and wild rice, veg and salad
Yummy!
You can only drink water, no alcohol whatsoever.
The recipe for the cabbage soup itself is actually quite healthy! Cabbage, onions, celery, carrots, peppers, garlic, mushrooms…
A nutritious, low calorie broth, certainly. Not sure though, if I’d want to eat it several times a day, every day!
Cabbage Soup Diet Reviews – Does it Work…?
Sure, any very low calorie, near starvation diet will result in short term weight loss.
However, cabbage has no miracle fat burning properties…it’s just bulky to help fill you up and low in calories.
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a seven day diet — do not stay on it for longer than that! — during which you may lose as much as 10-12lbs.
Sounds inviting, no?
Trouble is the weight will go straight back on again when you go back to eating normally.
The weight you do lose will mostly be made up of water. You’ll lose some lean tissue as well as your body breaks down muscle to burn for energy.
Your metabolism will also slow down as your body seeks to conserve energy due to it equating the extreme calorie reduction with starvation!
Is it worth putting yourself through a week of cabbage soup and little else to temporarily lose 10lbs?
You decide!
Cabbage Soup Diet Reviews – The Bottom Line…
This is a dodgy diet that’s outstayed its welcome. I would never recommend it to anyone.
Sure, you’ll lose some weight quickly, but as we’ve said before…the longer the weight takes to come off, the more likely it is to stay off.
Whilst the Cabbage Soup Diet is low in calories, protein, carbs and essential vitamins and minerals, seven days is unlikley to do you any harm.
Assuming you’re in reasonably good health.
Forget it if you’re a diabetic or have any other long term, chronic conditions.
If you do try it, a multivitamin and mineral supplement would be a good idea.
Remember our friend? She lasted three days on it…still not following our advice, though!
