Horizon EX 55 Elliptical Trainer Review

Our Horizon EX 55 elliptical trainer review would suggest that this is a low priced machine with low price quality and a number of weaknesses.

Hardly a ringing endorsement, but fairly typical of ellipticals in this price range.

‘Pile ’em high and sell ’em cheap in large numbers’ ellipticals like the EX 55 certainly eat up market share, but bargain basement prices don’t always – normally! – equate to a bargain.

This is a cheap elliptical with cheap components priced to sell, but not built to last.

If that’s what you’re after then this may be the elliptical trainer for you.

So what’s the problem with it, then?

Horizon EX 55 Elliptical Trainer Review – Features

The lack of stability is down to the build quality and the slightly odd layout of the machine.Let’s start with a positive – the magnetic resistance system isn’t bad. However, it’s let down by the rather choppy elliptical motion and the slightly wobbly feel when you’re riding the machine.

Lighter machines like this can minimise the resultant lack of stability by having a larger footprint, particularly rear drive machines that tend to be longer than front drive ones.

However, due to the ‘stacked flywheel system’ that places the flywheel above rather than in line and in front of the pedals, the overall length is reduced.

Good for storage, not so good for stability.

There are some very good front drive ellipticals around, such as Schwinn and in particular Sole.

Our Horizon EX 55 elliptical trainer review would suggest that this isn’t one of them, though.

To be fair, the EX 55 has a couple of other plusses, like the 18″ stride length and the warranties, which are not bad in this price range.

A lifetime warranty on the frame, 7 years on the brake but only one year on the parts and labour.

Given the cheap components, poor build quality and their likely impact on its durabilty, our Horizon EX 55 elliptical trainer review would suggest that you’ll need longer than a year!

This model retails for $799, but our Horizon EX 55 elliptical trainer review found it for $599 at Home Fitness Club.

Horizon EX 55 Elliptical Trainer Review – The Bottom Line…

Sorry, whilst Horizon ellipticals are certainly selling well, I can’t recommend this model.

Our Horizon EX 55 elliptical trainer review would suggest that you’d be making a mistake if you chose one over say a ProForm 900 CardioCrossor a Nordic Track CX938 – both can be had for a similar investment, are pretty decent machines and are hard to beat in this price range.
