The Sacred Heart Diet reviews as little more than a faddish soup-come-detox weight loss plan that’s very similar to the Cabbage Soup Diet…so does it work?
I’m not entirely sure where the name came from, but this is no more than a very low calorie liquid diet based almost entirely on drinking soup.
Take a look around the internet and you’ll come across lots of these rapid weight loss diets making all sorts of miraculous weight loss claims.
Judging by the discussion they cause in various forums, plenty of people try them…so what exactly is the Sacred Heart Diet?
Sacred Heart Diet for Weight loss
The Sacred Heart Diet is based on eating lots of soup. The theory is the more soup you eat, the more weight you lose.
The diet is promoted as a way to detox and cleanse your system. It’s also claimed that you’ll lose up to 14lbs in a week.
The diet is only supposed to be followed for seven days, but can be used every time you need to lose some weight quickly or when you feel the urge to detox.
There are several variations on the soup recipe, but here’s an example:
The idea is that you make up a large batch each time and then have a bowl whenever you’re hungry.
There are no limits on how much soup you can eat – just eat as much as you want, whenever you want!
As the soup is extremely low calorie and fiber-rich, you’re unlikely to be eating more than a few hundred calories a day.
You can also snack on raw vegetables as well in some variants, things like peppers, carrots, celery…yummy!
You should also drink plenty of water and calorie free beverages like black tea and coffee, both of which contain caffeine. They’re supposed to speed up your metabolism so you lose more weight.
Sacred Heart Diet Reviews – Does it Work…?
Given that you’ll be eating very few calories whilst you follow the diet, then yes, you’ll lose weight.
However, most of the weight you do lose will be water, as is the case with any diet in the first week or two.
Once you go back to eating normally again, the weight will go straight back on.
Is it healthy? Well, a day or two is unlikley to hurt you. A week? I’d suspect you’ll struggle to stick with it as eating vegetable soup all day is going to get boring fast!
No matter how much you eat, you’ll still end up hungry as despite the volume of soup helping to fill you up, you will not be fulfilling your body’s energy requirements.
There’s also very little protein or fat in the soup, which means that you’ll be deficient in the nutrients they provide – vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids…
Very low calorie, starvation diets like these also tend to lead to the loss of muscle tissue. Your body breaks down muscle to release protein, which it then burns for energy.
As a result your metabolism slows down, as your muscles are responsible for most of the energy your body expends each day.
The less muscle you have, the fewer calories you burn…and the more prone you’ll be to weight gain.
Repeated stints on very low calorie diets like the Sacred Heart Diet end up leaving you fatter than before you started!
Sacred Heart Diet Reviews – The Bottom Line…
Very low calorie, liquid diets are not a safe, healthy way to lose weight in the long term.
Sure, you’ll lose a few pounds quickly, but much of that weight loss will not be sustainable.
The Sacred Heart Diet reviews well as a means of increasing your vegetable and fiber intake, and vegetable soups are a valuable addition to any healthy eating plan.
But only as part of a healthy, balanced diet based on lean protein, fruit, veg, wholegrains and exercise.
As far as detoxing is concerned, I’m not a big fan.
If you eat a healthy balanced diet, drink plenty of water, limit your alcohol intake, quit smoking and get some regular exercise then there’s no need to detox.
Besides, irrespective of your diet, your body continually detoxes itself 24/7 anyway.
