Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer Review

Our Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer review looks at an impressive, value for money elliptical from a trusted brand…is it a good machine for the budget buyer?

Schwinn makes a modest range of low to mid-price ellipticals that compete well in this competitive market. The 430 sits below the more expensive 418 and 438.

Whilst the competition may be fierce, all three ellipticals stand out when compared to the mediocre offerings from other big name companies.

I like Schwinn exercise bikes a lot and am becoming equally fond of their elliptical trainers too.

So what is it that makes them stand out in a field of similarly priced, but extremely average elliptical trainers?

Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer Review – Features…

I can’t think of many ellipticals that are any better – or even comes close – for $799.In a nutshell, you get a solid, stable, quite, well put together elliptical trainer at a very nice price in the Schwinn 430.

You don’t get the gimmicky extras that are common in ellipticals around the $800-$1,000 mark. Instead Schwinn has invested in the business end of the machine.

For instance, the 430 comes with the excellent eddy current brake (ECB) system, which provides an extremely quiet and very smooth ride with eight levels of computer controlled resistance.

Coupled with the high-inertia front drive, which has an oversized flywheel – that may take two people to unpack and install! – the heavy duty belt and BioGlide motion technology and you’re approaching club quality performance.

The 18″ stride length is generous in this price range and should be enough for most people.

The articulating pedals are a must on a front drive machine and ensure your foot follows its natural range of motion.

However, your heel does have a tendency to lift off the pedal slightly, although this doesn’t really cause a problem.

There’s plenty of support, although the pedal surface is a little hard and is bereft of the cushioning found on the 418 and 438.

You also get eight workout programs and a clear and easy to read LCD console display. It’s not back lit, though, which doesn’t help when the lights are down.

As you would expect, the electronics enable you to monitor your speed, distance covered, calories burned, resistance level and so on.

However, the handle grips used to monitor your heart rate are a bit awkward if you’re using the upper body workout levers, as you need to move your hands from one to the other.

One lasting impression I was left with following this Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer review was how well built, solid and stable it felt.

The big flywheel helps as does the 62″ x 27″ frame. Not that the 430 is too heavy to move or takes up a lot of space.

The machine is compact with a modest footprint and partially folds, which helps with storage.

The warranties aren’t bad, with 15 years on the frame, two years on the parts, one year on the electronics and six months on the labour and wear items.

The 430 retails for $799, but our Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer review found it on sale for as low as $599 with free shipping at Amazon. Although we suggest that you check out Amazon for the current price.

Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer Review – The Bottom Line…

This is a well put together, solid, stable and compact elliptical that provides a smooth ride at a very reasonable price.

It’s not commercial quality, but you can’t really expect that for $799 – at $599 with free shipping it looks like a bargain, though.

The Schwinn elliptical range is a pleasant surprise given the dearth of good quality elliptical at this price.

As a result of our Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer review, I’d have no hesitation in recommending this model to the home exerciser looking for a quality performer at a value for money price.

At $799 it’s a good buy – at the sale price of $599 with free shipping it’s hard to beat, but do check Amazon for the current price.
